Day 26...Heading north from our base at La Manche campground, our first stop is the Cape Spear National Historic Site. Very well set up, with knowledgeable museum staff and friendly smiles.
A short drive up into St. John's and we're at Signal Hill, another famous radio/ Marconi site
After a far too brief cruise about St. John's on another hot day, we headed back south to our campsite and stopped along the way to snap photos of a good ship exhibit.
An unusual water/air tower near La Manche
Day 27...a touring day starting off at the Salmonier Wildlife Refuge
St. Shott's lighthouse is our next stop. It's very foggy and the foghorn is very loud.
Day 28...Lunch in Trepassy at the "Edge of the Avalon Inn".
As Jackie says "excellent food, excellent service and a great spot"
Near Trepassey, we find a dirt track that leads to a great oceanside campsite for the night.
Get the BBQ set up on the side of the bus for salmon tonight
Cape Race is a famous spot, again for Marconi and his experiments.
Now we want to find a good spot for the night. In Newfoundland, there are plenty of places to park a VW bus for the night....ends of dirt roads at the ocean, a small beach, and often people will simply invite you to park right there on theier lawn.
We toured the roads and came into Point Lance, a little fishing and farming community on the southern tip of southwest Avalon, just south of the Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve we wanted to visit early the next morning.
We followed a little road to a small turnaround which still had a steep track up the cliffside and on to some more distant area with a foghorn. We decided to stop at the turnaround for the night.
John Fitzgerald lives in the house at the end, and he came over to greet us, offer his lawn for camping, and gave us some background of the area. He and Gerry were very friendly and interested in our travels as well.
.
Another great panorama landscape just lurking around every corner it seems...
Day 29...Ferry Day...
After dropping the pop top and getting underway from Point Lance, we quickly got to the ecological reserve under very very heavy fog....fod that lets you see 20 feet in front of the bus so pretty darn slow and steady to get there.
In the preserve parking lot. Can you see the Bus and the trailer?
We took the walk to the cliff edge and got some great videos of the nesting gannets.
Swirls of fog forced us to pay attention to avoid walking over a sharp cliff edge.
A little later as we're getting ready to head out for the ferry, the fog burns off for yet another nice day. The weather has been most unusual for the past month. We broung warm clothes and rain gear, but 95% of the time we wore the lightest t shirts and shorts we could on account of the heat like August in Ottawa. The major rain came a couple of times, but we were already on the road for a travel day, such as across the island from west side to east. It really could not have been more spectacular and rare.
We make good headway and get to the Placentia terminal well ahead of the rush so now we can relaxe knowing we're gonna have a great overnight berth and a good sleep in a full sized bed.
When we get to Nova Scotia, more explorations await
